That said, you have to factor in that this is a hair dryer as well, in which case you could actually say it's quite small. You will also need to practice a few times to get the knack, as is the case for any new technology – but that's what this is, something new and exciting and another option in ghd's roster. Our thick-haired tester found it took only a few passes on each section of rough-dried hair to achieve the same result she would with a separate dryer and straightener. It also doesn't knock every inch of texture from the hair as flat irons sometimes can, rather it smoothes and styles. It also benefits hair health, as the dryer gets up to 150ºC and the plates 120ºC (both lower than ghd's standard 185ºC temperature).

Measuring approximately two inches, the plates are 70 per cent wider than those on the Original. It also boasts the same dual sensors as the Gold Styler, for even heat distribution whether you’re looking to create silky-smooth locks or frizz-free waves. This is one of ghd’s most popular models, given the reasonable price tag and the versatile styling options, which makes it one of the best ghd hair straighteners if you're after value-for-money. It features floating ceramic plates that we found flex and glide easily through the hair without snagging.

That said, this tool does make charging easy thanks to its USB port, which we could easily plug into our laptop – and could use to charge in the car too – to give it a boost. Hot tools such as straighteners, curling tongs and hair dryers can cause heat damage to your hair. So choose a straightener with adjustable heating and preferably a maximum temperature of less than 160 degrees. Rough-textured plates that snag your hair and create unsightly kinks in your hair should be avoided at all costs.

Of course, the downside of having larger plates – which we experienced firsthand – is that they do take slightly longer to heat up than other ghd stylers. That said, the IV Original Styler is far from basic, and the perfect model if you are dipping your toes into the heat styling waters for the first time—or if you only straighten your hair on the odd occasion. Most ghd straighteners come with a warranty of two years, sometimes three, which gives you some peace of mind when making such an investment.

This was our favourite ghd tool for not only straightening the hair but also creating gorgeous curls and waves. It's lightweight, heats up very quickly, and can be easily manoeuvred to create curly styles that won't do too much damage to the hair.
